The dreaded maskne (or face acne) simply put describes a type of acne which results from wearing a face mask. Although this is a relatively new term brought about by the pandemic, maskne describes a skin condition known by dermatologists as Acne Mechanica. Most commonly found around the lower half of the face it can consist of a mixture of spots, inflamed hair follicles, blemishes, irritation and redness resulting from repeated friction against the skin. Wearing masks that aren’t breathable can create an environment which is warm and humid being the ideal breeding ground for bacteria to grow whilst on top of this makeup, sweat and oil can further encourage breakouts.
Although those with acne prone skin may be more likely to develop maskne unfortunately it can affect all of us at any age, especially as we move into warmer months.

Whilst the use of a face mask is still not going anywhere luckily there are a number of ways you can prevent maskne from taking over:
Wear a silk face mask

If possible try to avoid make-up altogether if you plan on wearing a mask for long periods of time as this enables bacteria to grow particularly in warm weather. As always be sure to thoroughly cleanse your face at the end of the day with water and an oil free acne cleanser.
Wash your masks!
Washing your reusable silk face mask will remove all the skin cells and oil build up which contributes to maskne. Experts recommend we should be washing our face mask after each wear, this is essential to both the spread of Covid 19 and the prevention of maskne. It may also be tempting to wash your face more than usual, however we recommend sticking to your usual AM and PM routines so as not to dry out your skin and cause irritation.
